Glossary of Mental Health Terms

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural and normal response to stress. It is a feeling of fear or worry about situations we may find nerve wracking, such as the first day of school or a first date. It can often manifest as a racing heart or fluttering stomach. Anxiety disorders are distinct from these occasional feelings of fear or worry. An anxiety disorder can be loosely defined as intense and persistent worrying that lasts longer than a period of six months which makes it difficult to carry out everyday activities and do the things we enjoy.

Depression

Depression is a mood disorder that causes intense feelings of sadness and hopelessness, making it difficult to carry out everyday activities and do the things we enjoy. Feeling sad is a natural and normal reaction to something bad happening. Depression is different from regular feelings of sadness because it is persistent and lasts for an extended period of time.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

CBT-I is a treatment plan that helps individuals replace thoughts and behaviors that interfere with getting a good night’s sleep with healthy habits that will improve the quality of their sleep.
